Son of George Geddes b.1715 and Katherine Johnston.

Married in 1784 Margaret "Peggy" Cruikshank b.17?? d.1805, first cousin, daughter of Andrew Cruikshank b.1726 and Margaret "Granny o'Hoy" Geddes and grand-daughter to "Tacksman" David Geddes b.circa 1665

They had 7 sons and 7 daughters, earning David the name of 'Father of Orkney'

Married 12 May 1804 William² or James³ Strang, Tacksman at Lopness, Sanday, Orkney.

M ii George b.31 January 1786 at Stromness and christened the same day¹.1840 aged 54.
Married 8 January 1814 Elizabeth Anderson of South Ronaldsay, Orkney, Scotland b.1794 d.1838, daughter (xi) of James 1st of Rispond b.1746 d.1828

M iii Andrew b.2 Feb 1787 at Stromness and christened the same day¹ d.1830 unmarried.
Set up in a small Tack called Evelex near Dornoch

M iv James John b.26 May 1788 at Stromness and christened the same day¹.
Commanded a ship in the naval service of the East India Company, and died on his station (unmarried? or did he possibly marry Jane Crookshank on 22 December 1812?).

F v Margaret b.18 October 1789 at Stromness and christened the same day¹.
Married 1 September 1810 John Cruikshank, her first cousin. They had the following children, the last two the last of the Cruikshanks on Orkney:
Harry died young;
Ann unmarried;
Margaret unmarried.

F vi Barbara christened 23 Oct 1790 at Stromness¹ died young.

M vii David b.23 October 1791 at Stromness christened 23 November 1791¹.
Engaged to his first cousin, another Margaret Cruikshank, died a young man, unmarried, in Bombay.

During the final years of his life David seems to have lost control of the family business started by his grandfather to the favour of a Captain Sims, with whom he had shared some time in captivity. Excesses included making promises of large dowries for his daughters, which would rebound in his son George's time.

Notes on sources

Anderson family tree

Information is largely taken from the book 'The Andersons of Peterhead'. This was based on the records made by John Anderson 1825/1903 [VIII 32], known as 'China John'. This was brought up to date in 1936 by Cecil Ford Anderson [X 17] and Agnes Donald Ferguson [CS 45 X b]. Many photographs were taken and compiled in an album by Olive Edis (daughter of Mary Murray, daughter of Andrew Murray (2) of Aberdeen). Corrections to both Janet Innes Anderson's and Alexander Murray's death dates from Robert Murray Watt and Iain Forrest.
